I came across an interesting article today on the RT Magazine webpage that sparked my interest considering I've been doing several spontaneous breathing trials in the ICU for clinicals so I thought I would share!
The article (provided in a link below) discusses a study presented by the 2015 American Thoracic Society comparing the parameters of prolonged mechanical ventilated subjects on and off listening to music via headphones during weaning trials. The outcomes exemplified dramatic decreases in respiratory rate, heart rate, anxiety, and dyspnea pre- and post-music intervention with no changes on non-music days.
I found this a bit ironic because last week in clinical's I had a patient I was performing a spontaneous breathing trial on and in attempt to keep him more relaxed I hummed a tune as I twirled- instantly the patient had a huge smile spread across their face. This got me thinking...if I were a patient that was admitted in the ICU for a prolonged period how nice it would be to be able to listen to some calming music ever so often. I do believe there is a correlation between music and creating a calming environment especially when the ICU can be scary for patients whom have been admitted for a prolonged period. It is all about the patient and doing whatever possible to put them at ease during an emotional time! I hope to see this strategy used in the future! What do you think? Is this something that should be investigated future for possible success in weaning ventilated patients?
